What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar and the month of obligatory fasting, during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset. The Quran was first revealed in it, and it contains Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Decree, better than a thousand months. It lasts 29 or 30 days and ends with Eid al-Fitr.

The virtue of Ramadan

When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of the Fire are closed and the devils are chained, as authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ. Whoever fasts it out of faith and hope for reward has his past sins forgiven, and an Umrah performed in it equals a Hajj in reward. It also holds Laylat al-Qadr, which Allah made better than a thousand months.

What is done on Ramadan?

Muslims fast its days and stand its nights in Tarawih prayer, and increase their recitation of the Quran — many completing it once or more. Charity multiplies, iftar tables are shared, the pre-dawn suhoor meal is kept following the Sunnah, and some devote themselves to iʿtikaf (retreat) in the mosque during the last ten nights seeking Laylat al-Qadr.

How is the date determined?

Dates here are calculated astronomically per the Umm al-Qura standard used in Saudi Arabia. Some countries rely on direct moon sighting instead, so the actual date can differ by about one day between regions.
