The death of Imam al-Bayhaqi

The hafiz Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Bayhaqi — author of "al-Sunan al-Kubra" and "Shuʿab al-Iman," and one of the greatest to serve the Prophetic hadith and Shafiʿi jurisprudence through his writings — died in Nishapur.

What is the Hijri calendar?

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar whose year is made up of twelve lunar months (about 354 days), dated from the migration (Hijra) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in 622 CE. This site shows today's Hijri date next to the Gregorian date using the Umm al-Qura calendar, with a quick Hijri ⇄ Gregorian converter, the main Islamic occasions, and prayer times.

Common questions about the Hijri date

Why does the Hijri date differ by a day between countries?

Dates here are calculated astronomically using the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Other countries rely on a direct sighting of the crescent on the 29th evening, so if the moon is not sighted the month can begin about one day later.

Can I see how many days are left until Ramadan or Eid?

Yes — the "Upcoming Islamic occasions" section on this page shows a day-by-day countdown for each occasion, with both its Hijri and Gregorian date.

How do I work out my age in the Hijri calendar?

Use the Hijri age calculator inside the converter: enter your date of birth in either calendar and it returns your age in Hijri years along with the weekday you were born on.

Are the prayer times shown accurate for my city?

Times are computed astronomically from each city's coordinates. They can differ by a few minutes from your local timetable, because authorities vary in the Fajr and Isha twilight angles they adopt.
